SPAfrica

Duration: 90 Min.  |  Performance  |  Englisch mit deutschen Übertiteln

For adults and young people from the age of 16

Europe has become rich and powerful at the expense of Africa. Can our tearschange thisimbalance?

“SPAfrica”, the world’s first “empathy drink”, is based on the exchange of resources between Europe and Africa. Drinking water from the regions south of the Sahara is exported to Europe. In return, tears are cultivated in the heart of Europe and brought to the water source in Africa.

Performance maker, visual artist and musician Julian Hetzel and actress Ntando Cele team up to explore the limits of empathy. Can empathy overcome power structures? Or does it reinforce existing privileges? “SPAfrica” sheds light on the problematic mechanisms and hidden racism that can be inherent in empathy. It contrasts the exploitation of natural and emotional resources and exposes neoliberal strategies in the search for alternative raw materials.

Ntando Cele was nominated for the “Theo d’Or 2024” for her acting performance in “SPAfrica”.
